Job Summary:

The Medical Director for the Pediatric Mental Health Institute (PMHI) Quality and Safety program will provide oversight and leadership for quality and safety across a comprehensive pediatric mental health continuum of care working collaboratively with the PMHI Chair and Institute Leadership (including Medical Directors, Chief of Psychology, Clinical Directors, Vice Presidents), and relevant Administrative and Patient Care Services Leadership. Other important collaborations will include working with the Quality/Patient Safety, Process Improvement, Clinical Effectiveness, Learning Health System teams at CHCO and within the CU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. Specifically, Service Line Administrator, Section/Divisional leadership and the Medical Staff/Providers will work with the Director to champion the Quadruple Aim of CHCO initiatives regarding quality and safety, improving access and equity, and advancing care quality and outcomes through research, education, systems integration, innovation, and advocacy.

Scope of responsibility will include overall leadership of QI and safety initiatives within PMHI, including teaching and coaching of team members regarding patient, family and team member safety, and providing direction and partnership for the QI/PI Program Manager. The Director of QI and Safety will partner with the Director of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Research, serve as a member of the PMHI Data Governance and Learning Health System Teams, partner with the Medical Director of Informatics to enhance efficiencies and access to data relevant to QI and safety, and partner with the process improvement team in strategic and quality initiatives. Position includes identifying and supporting research and education opportunities of faculty, staff, and trainees related to quality and safety work within PMHI. The Director will serve as a key member of the PMHI leadership team and participate in strategic discussions and operational planning across the pediatric mental health service line.

Key Responsibilities:

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Will partner with the PMHI Leadership Team, PMHI Medical & Clinical Directors, and CHCO Quality, Clinical Effectiveness, Patient Safety, and Process Improvement teams to set annual and strategic goals for quality and safety, implement initiatives to achieve these goals, create and use tools for tracking and monitoring outcomes/performance, develop, implement, and evaluate patient, family, provider and systems outcomes as appropriate.
  • Partners with PMHI leadership teams in the development of program specific educational tools and in training of staff, faculty, and trainees to optimize patient care and outcomes.
  • Will partner with PMHI leadership team to review patient satisfaction scores for the program, when applicable, and develop and implement strategies for improvement.
  • Will partner with the Clinical Application Systems Department and the Director of Informatics for the PMHI regarding optimization of EPIC for program specific needs.
  • Will work with CHCO Physician Relations and Pediatric Care Network to meet the needs of community referring providers and develop program specific materials as it relates to quality and safety.
  • The Director will model the CHCO Standards of Behavior and other policies and hold providers and care teams accountable for quality and safety standards.
  • Will partner with PMHI Chair, Research Directors, and Training Directors to advance research and education missions related to the quality and safety program.
  • Provides leads and oversight of mortality and morbidity case reviews and cause analyses; recommends changes to diagnostic and treatment protocols, and clinical/operational systems to support best practices.
  • Leads and oversees clinical pathways and guidelines development, implementation, and evaluation in partnership with CHCO Quality and Clinical Effectiveness team and relevant medical, clinical, and patient care services leaders and subject matter experts.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with leaders across the organization to ensure the adoption and maintenance of optimal clinical outcomes; makes decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives and solves underlying problems.
  • Ensures compliance against standards and recommendations of the Joint Commission, applicable standards of relevant professional societies, and applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Develops, maintains and enforces safety related policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the development of budget recommendations for operating expenditures to support strategic investments in quality and safety initiatives.
  • Provides oversight of the data collection and provision of information for surveys as well as meeting with and presenting data to payers and outside provider groups.
  • Provides analysis and report the PMHI outcomes to hospital and SOM leadership, members of the Institute, and community, state, and national partners.
  • Performs or participates in root cause analysis where a care error may have occurred and develop real-time solutions to systems issues that have led to or may lead to patient or team member harm.
  • Leads improvement task forces for improvement in mental health care delivery.
  • Creates and leads implementation of performance standards for clinicians in escalation of care and crisis preparedness.
  • In partnership with Quality Improvement Program Manager, lead work to identify and optimize ROI of clinical registry and multisite learning network collaboratives.
  • Serves as physician champion for annual USNWR survey.
  • Attend strategic and operational meetings as requested.

Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • The Director will work with PMHI Leadership to review program budgetary planning, and have input into decisions regarding staffing models that support efficient and effective delivery of services.
  • Will suggest and participate in cost savings/productivity strategies to meet or improve the operational budget while maintaining quality service, provider satisfaction, excellent patient outcomes, and patient and referring provider satisfaction.

Management/Supervision:
  • Provides input into the performance of the direct patient care staff and administrative staff as it relates to quality and patient safety.
  • Provides secondary input into the performance of the Quality Improvement Program Manager.
  • Will collaborate with the PMHI Leadership Team and CHCO Quality and Safety leaders to educate and hold providers accountable for adherence to CHCO practice, operational and behavioral standards. Is responsible for assuring house staff, medical students, interdisciplinary trainees and other clinicians comply with quality and safety training relevant to their program.

This is an at-will position. Performance will be reviewed annually by the Chair, Pediatric Mental Health Institute, with input from CHCO CMO, SOM Department Chair, and PMHI service line and patient care services leadership, other CHCO staff (as appropriate) and applicable CUSOM faculty and providers.

Work Location:

This position will be a 0.3 FTE buyout with a $9,000 annual stipend.
